Hypertext

Hypertext is a system that allows text to contain links to other text, which the reader can access immediately. It serves as the foundation of the World Wide Web and is commonly used to create a non-linear medium for information browsing and sharing. In a hypertext document, words or images can be hyperlinked, allowing the reader to jump to new information at the click of a button.

The concept enables users to navigate through a web of linked documents in a flexible and interactive way, rather than reading them in a predetermined, linear sequence. This makes for a more dynamic and user-driven experience, as individuals can explore related topics, definitions, or sources without having to follow a single, set path.

The term "hypertext" was first coined by Ted Nelson in 1965. Since then, it has revolutionized the way we access and share information, particularly through the internet.
