Vera Molnár

Vera Molnár (b. 1924) is a Hungarian-born French artist who is among the earliest creators of computer-generated art. She began experimenting with algorithmic and computational art in 1968.

Molnár was born in Hungary in 1924. She studied at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts in the 1940s. After moving to Paris in 1947, Molnár worked in a geometric abstract style influenced by constructivism and concrete art. She created collages, prints, and drawings exploring minimalist forms.

In 1968, Molnár began using a plotter and computer programs to systematically generate geometric abstract compositions. Her early digitally fabricated pieces like Homage to Mondrian (1969) explored variations within constrained parameters. She continued to develop her early algorithmic art through the 1970s.

Molnár adopted a generative approach of defining rule sets and allowing the computer to produce autonomous variations. Her methodical experimentation with computer-aided systematic art was groundbreaking for integrating technology into the creative process. Molnár's pioneering computer art stressed the artistic potential in ceding some control to logical, automated systems.

Molnár has created geometric algorithmic artworks for over 50 years. Now in her late 90s, she collaborates with computers to produce algorithmic drawings and prints. Molnár's long career demonstrates how technology can expand artistic possibilities. She remains an influential pioneer of generative and computational art.
