California Institute of Technology

The California Institute of Technology, commonly known as Caltech, has made major contributions to artificial intelligence research over many decades. Located in Pasadena, California, Caltech is renowned for its strong focus and capabilities in science and engineering.

In the early history of AI, Caltech professors were pioneers in fields like mathematical logic, neural networks, reinforcement learning, robotics and machine learning. Prominent names include John McCarthy, who coined the term “artificial intelligence”, Marvin Minsky, Carver Mead and John Hopfield. Caltech attracted and produced many AI researchers who would become leaders in the field later like Fei-Fei Li, Pietro Perona, Yaser Abu-Mostafa and Richard Murray.

Caltech was one of the few universities involved in the development of early AI systems, like the foundations of computer vision laid by Professor Azriel Rosenfeld’s group in the 1960s. Over the next decades, Caltech evolved into a leading AI research powerhouse. Several companies focused on AI applications were spun off from Caltech like Reliable Robotics, Anthropic and Syntiant.

Today Caltech operates world-class centers like the Center for Data-Driven Discovery and the Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Institute for Neuroscience to propel fundamental and translational advances in AI. Researchers tackle challenges in global optimization, causality, human-AI interaction, AI safety and more.
